SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:
John indicated he was grateful for and proud of the plaque he received honoring his 42 years of Sertoma service. He was born 1942 in N Denver. Family had moved to Littleton by the first grade where he attended class in a one room school house, The area is now ACC.. In the 8 th grade he was taught in the basement of Lutheran Presbyterian church. By ninth grade Littleton High School was built. Here John readily admits he pursued athletics far more than academics. He was awarded an athletic scholarship to Denver University but the school dropped football before he ever got to put on a uniform and lug the ball.
In 1965 John sold insurance, etc for State Farm. He brought some of his remaining State Farm freebies even passing out a few. As a child his first job was performing magic tricks for .05 a pop. Later he was a paperboy then 10 years as a tile setter to which he attributes his current bad back. Forty years ago he entered the Army Reserves. He was stationed at Fort Bliss serving as a JAG trying soldiers accused of errors in judgment in Viet Nam.
John has been married 36 years or a total of 6 wives. He is now ahead of the curve as he and #6, Karen have been married for 7 years. From this target rich environment John only claims 4 children producing 4 grandchildren.
John listed a number of rivers starting with the Weaver and ending up with the South Platte. Ron Johnson brought him into the club. John owns and rents out a condo in Silverton, which he generously has offered to rent to any club member at 1/2 price.

Program: Scott Manley introduced Frank Novachek from Excel Energy who is the brother-in-law of our food caterer, Leslie. . Frank earned a BS in physics at DU and masters at CU. He is currently on the National Board For Hydrogen Technologies and shared with us a presentation he had recently given in Washington DC.
In 2003 President George W Bush began pushing hydrogen-fueled cars. Frank chairs the NRA committee whose task concluding is to compare current hydrogen information and test it against ecology, cost, and the environment. Cost considers life cycle competitiveness, etc. Their results were subjected to independent reviews by the Energy Department who feels hydrogen is the single most important energy source we can leave as a legacy for the future.
Renewable energy sources include hydrogen, electricity and ethanol. Battery powered vehicles thus far have proven too heavy and to bulky. All but the hydrogen would continue to add to air pollution while it is surmised that future vehicles fueled by hydrogen fuel cells will meet the established goals of emitting no more than 80% of the 1990’s standard for green house emissions and 100% reduction in air pollution.
Frank’s team concludes that only the hydrogen powered fuel cell vehicles will best satisfy the criteria for eliminating air pollution, reasonable cost, renewability, achieving American oil independence while helping to stabilize world economies.
Toyota is anticipating introducing a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle by 2010 with GM right behind in 2011. Gentlemen we’re talking 100mpg here!
